Wind in both our hairs, arms around each other, this was the moment it all actually felt real. A LOT more real! We’re getting married!
Over the years, Hayes and I have photographed many couples’ engagement sessions, telling their love stories through photos and videos, and allowing them to enjoy time alone together. We get to ask questions like the color of their wedding napkins or their first dance song choice. We get to hear of the things they’re most excited for, and the things they’re nervous about. You’d think once it was our turn, we would easily wrap our heads around it all, but truth be told, it STILL gets us that this is our life and soon-to-be marriage!
Our engagement session day, we took our own advice and got ready extra early to enjoy the process. Outfits were carefully chosen months in advance and laid out the night before, and butterflies filled our stomachs. I took extra time to make sure every eyelash and curl was perfect, which was certainly more difficult to do with the blazing sun that day! California heat, you are ruthless sometimes!! Hayes’s getting ready process was a tad more simple, though we did make sure his hair was just right, which I appreciated.
Once we were all ready, we started our mini trip from San Diego up to Palm Springs. Cheesecake Factory dinner reservations were a to-do on our way up, along with singing songs with the windows down (but just slightly because of our hair). Did I mention it was hot?!
Pulling up to the neighborhood for our first location, we were in LOVE with all the houses around us. The vibrant colors and vintage cars were all over the place and the vibe felt the way our love does: fun and exciting! Mary, our amazing photographer, met up with us to start the session, and she did the most beautiful job. There were so many little moments where we were walking or twirling, only to burst into huge belly laughs.
After switching locations, the vibe was a lot more dreamy. Sunset cascaded over the mountaintops leaving a golden glow all around us. It was one of the most beautiful things we’ve ever seen! The wind gave us a bit of a challenge, but it also allowed for more intimate moments snuggled up, foreheads together, where it really hit that this was our forever.
Song of Solomon 3:4 says, “I have found [the one] whom my soul loves.” That quote is used quite a bit in the wedding world, but the Biblical meaning rings true for us. It’s so much deeper than just our hearts because it’s rooted in someone bigger than us: Jesus! He leads us in every trial and season, before we ever knew one another on opposite ends of the U.S., and continues to lead us now, together. How wonderful it is to be a part of something God made in the beginning of the world knowing in the end it would all point us back to His love. The most beautiful picture, and looking through these, that’s all I see.
At the end of our session, we headed over to The Cheesecake Factory to enjoy dinner, drinks, and Hershey’s cheesecake – yum!! Bellies full and hearts so happily in love, we made our way home. It truly was one of the best days and we are so grateful that we got to document this season!
HUGE thank you to Mary for photographing us! We cannot wait to see her at the wedding!
