One of my favorite things about family photography is documenting families exactly as they are in this season of life. The giggles, the curiosity, the endless energy, the quiet snuggles — all of the little moments that often pass by too quickly. The Schaecher family’s session at Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad was the perfect example of why I love photographing families this way.
Why Batiquitos Lagoon Is One of the Best Locations for Family Photos in Carlsbad
Nestled between Carlsbad and Encinitas, Batiquitos Lagoon is one of North County San Diego’s hidden gems. The 561-acre ecological reserve features a scenic trail that winds alongside calm waters, native plants, and abundant wildlife. Home to a game sanctuary and bird estuary, the lagoon offers a peaceful escape that feels miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Interestingly, Batiquitos Lagoon was once connected directly to the ocean before sediment eventually closed it off. Today, the calm waters create a serene backdrop for family photos, and despite the nearby freeway overhead, the area remains surprisingly quiet and peaceful. It’s also one of the few scenic locations where dogs are welcome, making it a wonderful choice for families looking to include every member of their crew.
For this session, the evening light was absolutely beautiful. Warm sunlight poured through the palm trees and surrounding greenery, creating the soft, golden glow every photographer dreams about.
Capturing the Schaecher Family in This Season of Life
Melanie and Phil brought their three children — one daughter and two sons — for an evening focused on capturing this stage of their family’s story. While we always begin with the must-have portraits where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling, those are only the beginning.
Before every family session, I reassure parents that their children don’t need to perform, smile on command, or sit perfectly still. In fact, I prefer the opposite. My goal is to create space for kids to be themselves and to let them help lead the session. When children are free to explore, play, and interact naturally, the resulting images feel genuine and authentic to who they are right now.
Why Candid Family Photos Create Meaningful Memories
Once we captured those classic family portraits, the real fun began.
The kids ran around together, played games, shared laughs, and explored the trails. There were playful moments full of energy and movement, followed by sweet pauses for hugs, snuggles, and quiet connection. We documented each child individually, the siblings together, and the entire family interacting naturally with one another.
One of my favorite parts of every family session is making time for the parents. Between school schedules, sports practices, and the demands of everyday life, parents often find themselves taking countless photos of their children while rarely appearing in photos together.
That’s why I always carve out time for mom and dad portraits.
At the heart of every family is the relationship that started it all, and those images often become some of the most meaningful photographs from the entire gallery. Watching Melanie and Phil interact together while their children played nearby was such a beautiful reminder of the foundation they’ve built as a family.

As the sun dipped lower behind the trees, we finished the session surrounded by warm light, laughter, and the kind of moments that can’t be planned. The Schaechers were incredibly playful, loving, and present with one another, making this session such a joy to photograph.
Family photos don’t have to be stiff or stressful. They can be filled with movement, adventure, connection, and room for your children to simply be themselves. Years from now, those are often the moments you’ll treasure most.
