There’s something about live music that changes the entire feeling of a wedding day. Long after the florals are packed away and the cake is cut, couples often remember how their wedding felt. Music plays such a huge role in creating that atmosphere.

As a San Diego wedding photography and videography team, we’ve seen firsthand how live piano music can completely transform events. So when we wanted to share more about creating a wedding day that feels timeless, we knew exactly who to ask.

Our dear friend and fellow luxury vendor, Petra Persolja of Platinum Pianist, shared all things live wedding music, from creating ambiance to song choices. An award-winning pianist with a Doctorate in Piano Performance, Petra has performed at iconic venues including Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, and Bellagio, bringing a dynamic approach to events across Southern California.

If you’re currently planning your wedding and wondering whether live music is worth it, here’s what Petra had to say.

Why Live Wedding Music Makes Such a Difference

According to Petra, live music transforms a wedding from beautiful to unforgettable. Unlike playlists, live piano responds to the energy of the moment in real time, evoking feeling, anticipation, intimacy, and elegance. Guests may not consciously notice every song being played, but they absolutely feel the atmosphere.

“Live piano has a way of softening a space, elevating emotion, and making moments feel timeless,” Petra shared.

As wedding vendors ourselves, we couldn’t agree more. Some of the most beautiful ceremony moments we’ve ever documented were paired with live music, creating an atmosphere that felt intentional and deeply personal.

The Best Moments for Live Piano to Enhance Guest Experience

A pianist does far more than simply play songs, and music helps shape the flow of the entire wedding day. Throughout the ceremony, live piano adds depth to every transition, from the anticipation before the aisle walk to emotional vows. During cocktail hour, it creates a warm, sophisticated atmosphere that helps guests feel immersed in the experience.

“Cocktail hour sets the tone for the reception while guests relax, connect, and fully take in the experience of the day,” Petra explained. This creates an atmosphere that feels elevated and welcoming without overpowering conversation, which is especially important for events focused on guest experience.

“For luxury weddings especially, music is often what ties together the visual beauty and emotional experience of the event,” Petra shared. “Guests naturally become more emotionally present when they hear live instruments.”

Other favorite moments include guest arrival, marriage license signing, dinner, and special dances.

Modern vs. Traditional & Customizing Songs

One of the most interesting things Petra shared was how much wedding music trends have shifted.

“Honestly, over the past year, I’ve only been asked a handful of times to play traditional classical pieces,” she explained.

Today’s couples are choosing songs that feel personal to their relationship and story. Artists like Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and Olivia Dean are becoming increasingly popular choices for live arrangements. Cinematic movie/show soundtracks, like Bridgerton, have also caught the attention of many brides and grooms, but one in particular has stayed popular: Pride & Prejudice. Its emotional piano themes create a romantic atmosphere that translates beautifully into weddings.

For couples choosing modern selections, Petra often transforms songs into elegant, refined piano arrangements that feel wedding-appropriate.

“In fact, sometimes I put together as many songs as there are wedding party members so each person gets their own song,” Petra explained.

While this requires more flexibility and timing during the ceremony, it also creates an incredibly personal experience for everyone involved. One of Petra’s favorite parts of the planning process is hopping on a call with couples to play through different song ideas so they can hear how everything will sound beforehand.

What Couples Should Consider When Hiring a Wedding Pianist

Beyond talent alone, Petra encourages couples to look for a musician who reads a room, adapts flow, and collaborates. Experience matters tremendously at weddings, where moments are happening simultaneously.

“It’s important that couples genuinely connect with the musician’s style and presence, since music becomes such an emotional part of the wedding day,” Petra shared.

She also offers couples a visually elevated experience through her stunning white piano shell setup, which brings the luxurious appearance of a grand piano to venues even when an on-site piano isn’t available.

Creating a Wedding Day That Feels Timeless

When we asked Petra for her biggest piece of advice for enhancing weddings, her answer was simple:

“Focus less on trends and more on how you want people to feel.”

The weddings guests remember most are not always the biggest or most extravagant. They’re the ones that feel intentional, emotional, and deeply personal. Music plays such a huge role in shaping that experience. And honestly? We couldn’t agree more.
